Tayport was origionally known as Ferry-Port-on-Craig. It was initially described as a small leisurely community but the arrival of the railway changed things around 1846. A new harbour was constructed to accomodate paddle steamers which provided a ferry service between Tayport and Dundee. This service continued until 1920.
During the second half of the 19th century, employement was dramatically increased: the first sawmill and timber yard was established in 1860, the first cloth mill in 1865, and the first engineering works 10 years later.
Tayport Railway Station closed in 1966.
