Local HistoryTayport was origionally known as Ferry-Port-on-Craig. It was initially described as a small leisurely community but the arrival of the railway changed things around 1846. A new harbour was constructed to accomodate paddle steamers which provided a ferry service between Tayport and Dundee. This service continued until 1920. During the second half of the 19th century, employement was dramatically increased: the first sawmill and timber yard was established in 1860, the first cloth mill in 1865, and the first engineering works 10 years later. Tayport Railway Station closed in 1966. Local History Articles
