If the site was that of Castle Cottage, why does the sketch show the wall backing on the water - castle Cottage is too far away???

I don't think the artist is implying the wall backs onto water. Its just grass or something else on the other side.

I was born in Castle Cottage in 1934 .still there when I was home in 1972. I stopped in Spring Cottage alongside.
