A week past Sunday
(12th of October) saw Tayport Tennis Club hold its club
Championships finals and the players enjoyed a fine
afternoon of competitive tennis.
In the Gents’
Singles, defending champion, Ian Ness, defeated James
McRitchie in a repeat of last year’s final, with Ian in
even more clinical form this time around.
He carried that
form into the Mixed Doubles, teaming up with regular
partner Gillian Rennie to again take the title. Ian and
Gillian beat the strong pairing of Jimmy Ness and Sandra
Dillon in comprehensive fashion.
Next up for Ian
was another battle against his brother, Jimmy, this time
in the Masters' over-35s final. Jimmy pushed Ian hard
in the second set, but it was another straight sets
victory for the older sibling.
The duo clashed
again in the Gents’ doubles final. This match went to
three sets, with Martijn Schenning and Ian recovering
from losing the opening set to see off Derek Ritchie and
Jimmy, in what was an entertaining contest.
Having been on
court all afternoon, Ian Ness still had one more match
to play, the Masters’ Mixed Doubles. Partnering Sandra
Dillon, who was playing in her fourth final of the day,
they lost out to Richard Tough and Chris Randerson, in a
very watchable three-setter, which kept the small crowd
of spectators occupied well into a pleasant Sunday
evening.
That match was the
second time that Chris Randerson had got the better of
Sandra Dillon, having earlier triumphed in the Masters’
Singles. Chris, however, would lose out in the final of
the Ladies’ Singles-proper when she played Gillian
Rennie, in a match which was played on the Monday
morning.
Playing in her
first final under her married name, Gillian made a
blistering start, taking the first set without any
problems. Chris, however, struck back and was similarly
comfortable winning the second. Gillian recovered
though and took the decisive set to retain her title.
Meanwhile, in the
Ladies' Doubles, Gillian Rennie and Rachel Callaghan
scored an emphatic win against Sandra Dillon and Claire
Ness
Another final
which took place on the Sunday was the in the Under-18
Girls’ Singles. In two long sets, Claire Ness beat
Rachel Callaghan. In the Under-18 Boys’ Singles, Ross
McKinstry won in three sets against Tom Randerson, prior
to Finals’ Day and, due to holiday commitments, there
are still a couple of junior events to be decided.
Trophies will be
presented on Monday evening, the 27th October,
immediately before the club’s Annual General Meeting, to
be held, as has become the custom, at Scotscraig Bowling
Club. Prize-giving commences at 7.30pm, with the AGM
due to get underway by 8.00pm. It is hoped that as many
members as possible can make it along to the event, in
support of the players and the club itself.
